CSP vs COB: LED technologies compared

14 July 2025

In the world of linear lighting, miniaturisation is an ongoing challenge. Designers are constantly seeking increasingly compact profiles, without compromising on luminous efficiency, light quality, or ease of integration. In this context, choosing the right LED technology – particularly between CSP and COB LEDs – plays a crucial role. Let’s take a closer look at the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of these two solutions.

CSP LEDs: Miniaturisation and high performances

CSP LEDs  (Chip Scale Package) are ultra-compact LED chips without a traditional package.

They are mounted directly onto the printed circuit board with a minimal footprint, enabling a very high linear density. Thanks to their ultra-small size, CSP LEDs make it possible to create ultra-thin mini profiles, with sophisticated designs and high performances.

Advantages of CSP LEDs:

  • Extreme miniaturisation, ideal for profiles with a minimal footprint.
  • High luminous density, ensuring strong performance in compact spaces.
  • Excellent thermal performances, if properly dissipated.

Disadvantages of CSP LEDs:

  • More complex optical management due to the high density, the risk of visible “dotting” is greater.
  • More sophisticated manufacturing process, with higher costs and longer assembly times.
  • Greater sensitivity to thermal shocks or mounting errors.

COB LEDs: Homogeneous light and proven reliability

COB LEDs (Chip On Board) consist of an array of LED chips mounted directly onto an conductive substrate, covered in a uniform layer of phosphor material.

This configuration allows for continuous, uniform lightwithout visible dotting, making this technology ideal for mini light profiles without an opal diffuser or with very low profiles.

Advantages of COB LEDs:

  • Excellent light uniformity, even at short distances from the emission surface.
  • Easy integration into profiles, including curved or slim designs.

Disadvantages of COB LEDs:

  • Limited dimensional flexibility.
  • Limited luminous density compared to other technologies.
  • Sensitivity to overheating, which can affect the module’s lifespan.
  • Yellowish surface colour, caused by the phosphor coating layer.

How to choose?

Luminous density ●●●○○ ●●●●○
Small dimension ●●●○○ ●●●●○
Ease of integration ●●●○○ ●●○○○
Average cost ●●●○○ ●●●○○

Choose CSP LEDs if you need high performances in extremely compact spaces — ideal for invisible profiles, recessed installations, or sophisticated architectural designs.

Choose COB LEDs if your goal is homogeneous, continuous light — ideal for visible profiles, installations in residential or retail environments, and for simplifying integration.

There is no universally “better” technology. The choice depends on the design environment and the mechanical, optical, and cost constraints. COB and CSP are two complementary solutions in the world of linear lighting.

The decision is not based solely on performance, but also on design, aesthetic, and cost constraints. CSP technology currently plays a more prominent role in Domus Line solutions, with models specifically designed to fully leverage the strengths of these sources — meeting the expectations of both OEM and retail clients.
