Illuminating design: between functionality, depth, atmosphere, and emotion
| Domus Line at Milano Design Week 2026
During Milano Design Week 2026, held in Milan from 21 to 26 April, we set ourselves a goal: to explore how light can enhance depth, mood, functionality, and emotion in contemporary Italian design.
Lighting integrated into furniture has now moved beyond its original primary purpose: FUNCTIONALITY. Undeniably, opening a drawer or a wardrobe door and seeing its interior and contents illuminated is a useful and pleasant experience.
Beyond this essential function, light also brings depth, atmosphere, and emotion.
We observed several installations featuring furniture designed across multiple levels and staggered planes, as well as panelled walls extending beyond their traditional boundaries to reshape interiors. Here, light finds a new role: it hides behind surfaces and creates DEPTH within the space, guiding users through their spatial experience.
In other cases, light draws geometries and becomes an integral part of the design itself. This was evident in many installations where glass played a leading role. Transparent doors and glass shelves are illuminated by light profiles installed along the rear edges of the panels. This interplay of transparency and reflections creates an environment with a strong visual impact, where light generates a captivating and evocative ATMOSPHERE.
Whether concealed from view or fully integrated into the design, light can evoke different EMOTIONS: surprise, when it is not immediately revealed; serenity, when carefully adjusted and positioned to create a warm and comfortable environment; and even wonder, when it produces patterns and geometric effects.
Milano Design Week is always a discovery, and this year it brought home to us the ability of light to enhance that distinctive sense of beauty inherent in Italian design.
